Anti-Fog for Helmets: What It Is, How It Works and How to Fit It

If you've ridden in winter before, you know the problem: you stop at a traffic light and the visor fogs up in an instant, blocking your view at the worst possible moment. The most effective solution is called anti-fog — and in this guide we explain what it is, why it works and how to fit it.
Why does the visor fog up?
Fogging happens when the warm, moist air you breathe out meets the cold surface of the visor. The vapour condenses into millions of tiny droplets and forms that white film that blocks your view. The bigger the temperature difference between inside and outside, the faster it fogs up — which is why the problem gets worse in cold weather and rain.
How anti-fog works
An anti-fog lens is a thin second lens that attaches to the inner face of the visor, creating a small air chamber between the two. That layer of air insulates the inner lens from the cold outside, keeping it close to the temperature of your face. Without the thermal shock, the vapour stops condensing — and your view stays clear, even when stopping and starting in traffic.
It's the same principle as double glazing on a window: two surfaces with air in between insulate far better than one alone.
How to fit it
Fitting is simple and needs no tools:
- Most prepared visors have two adjustable pins on the inner sides.
- Gently curve the anti-fog lens and clip it onto the two pins.
- Adjust the tension on the pins so the lens sits snugly against the visor, with no play.
- Peel off the protective film and it's ready to use.
If your visor doesn't have pins, there are universal anti-fog options that attach directly to the inner face.
